San Diego’s Willow Johnson Earns Player of the Week

Willow Johnson, San Diego Mojo

The San Diego Mojo are winning at the right time, as they make a push for the Pro Volleyball Federation playoffs. A big reason for their recent success has been the play of outside hitter Willow Johnson.

Johnson has been named PVF Player of the Week, an honor presented by Franklin Sports, for the week ending April 30.

Last week, Johnson averaged 17.7 kills and 20 points in San Diego’s three matches. The Mojo won twice, inching their way into fourth place, and only a few percentage points behind the third place team, Grand Rapids.

Johnson is the second Mojo player to earn Player of the Week honors in the last three weeks, joining teammate Nootsara Tomkom, who won the award on April 16.

Johnson played college volleyball for the University of Oregon, where she was primarily a right side hitter. The 6’3 Johnson was a 2018 AVCA All-America Honorable Mention, and 2018 AVCA Pacific North All-Region Honorable Mention, as well as a 2018 All-Pac-12 Honorable Mention. She is the daughter of Hall of Fame pitcher Randy Johnson.

The Mojo (9-10) battled through three five-set matches last week, winning twice, once against Omaha, and the other victory coming against Orlando, in which Johnson recorded 20 points and 17 kills.
